Futanari is the Japanese term for 'hermaphroditism' and by extension also for 'androgyny'. Literally translated it means 'two forms' or 'being two'. These are people who have both male and female sexual characteristics. In today's colloquial language, the term 'Futanari' is primarily used to describe a person or figure that has a feminine face and body shape. Beyond Japan, however, the term 'Futanari' is mainly used to describe a pornographic genre.

Use of the term 'Futanari'

Nowadays, futanari are mostly found as illustrated characters in pornographic genres. However, these are usually not porn films in the classic sense, but primarily animations, comics and computer games. In these, futanari usually appear as figures that have both a penis and a vulva. These figures are often referred to as futa(s).

Nonetheless, the term 'Futanari' is still used today for people who fit the above defining characteristics. Within the Futanari category there are a few different variations of representation. On the one hand, the term includes hermaphrodites in the strict sense, i.e. people who have both male and female sex organs. Within the Futanari movement, these are often characterized by a very feminine, voluptuous appearance. On the other hand, the term is also used for people who have both male and female sexual characteristics. Although these are characterized by an androgynous appearance, they only have one sex organ, i.e. a penis or a vulva.

The depiction of the sexual characteristics of the Futanari within the pornographic works can vary greatly. The depiction of exaggeratedly large sex organs, which assume anatomically impossible proportions, is particularly popular. Although the characters are often depicted with their penises erect, the testicles are occasionally omitted as well. In addition, women who have a penis-like enlarged clitoris are rarely found in the illustrations. However, these fall within the margins of the definition. Since there is no clear definition of the term, it cannot be said unequivocally whether this variant can be described as classic futanari.

The term 'Futanari' is mainly used in Europe for pornographic works that use style elements from anime and manga. For works that are characterized by Western elements, the terms Dickgirl, Shemale or New Half are used in the English-speaking world. Since a dick girl is always equipped with a penis and is characterized by a rather masculine appearance, it is considered controversial whether she can also be counted among the futanari. New Halfs and Shemales, on the other hand, are trans women who have female characteristics and may have had hormonal treatment but not sex reassignment surgery. They are also referred to as futanari in colloquial Japanese.

Origin of the Futanari

In Japanese folklore, various ideas regarding sexual characteristics arose long ago. In old traditional songs there are already references to the worship of deities, whose gender was sometimes not clearly determined. There are also indications that Japanese culture long ago assumed that gender change was possible. For example, there was a widespread belief among the population that some people could change their gender depending on the phase of the moon. These individuals were referred to as hangetsu, which literally means 'half moon' or 'half month'. One possible reason why clearly defined gender boundaries have not existed in Japan for many centuries and maybe even millennia is traditional Japanese clothing. Since this made it difficult to clearly distinguish between men and women, guards were often forced to carry out gender checks. In addition, women often disguised themselves as men, since the female sex was forbidden from visiting certain places.

In the 12th to 14th centuries, traditional dances were performed by the so-called Shirabyoshi at the Japanese imperial courts. These were men disguised as women. However, the roots of such representations probably go back to the beginnings of Buddhism, since the Buddhist deities cannot always be assigned to a specific gender. In Japan, not only the masculine appearance of women, but also the feminine appearance of men was rated very positively for a long time. Especially during the Edo period, which lasted from 1603 to 1868, there was a great interest in androgyny, and thus also in the futanari, both within the samurai and within the population.

Only towards the end of the 19th century did Japan's open attitude towards the issues of transsexuality, homosexuality and nudity gradually change. The reason for this is probably the western influence that was slowly reaching the country at this time. Finally, in 1872, a law was passed criminalizing homosexual intercourse. While nudity had never been a taboo subject in Japan before, as a result of Europeanization, there was increasing censorship and social taboos, which also affected the position of the futanari. It was not until the early 1990s that censorship regulations were relaxed again, leading to growing popularity and broader social acceptance of nudity and hermaphroditism. As a result, numerous new sexual orientations and film genres emerged and the futanari also became part of the Japanese mainstream.

Distinction from other genders and orientations

Futanari is a non-binary gender identity that is characterized by both male and female attributes. The non-binary genders include transgender, genderqueer, gender fluid, bigender, trigender, pangender and alender, which in turn can be divided into numerous subcategories. Since genderqueer includes people who identify as a combination of man and woman, futanari can be assigned to genderqueer. Futanari differ from other non-binary genders in terms of their gender definition and can therefore be clearly distinguished from most other genders.

A non-binary gender that is distinctly different from Futanari is Xenogender. Xenogender refers to people who cannot or cannot exclusively describe their gender with the common concepts of masculinity and femininity or genderlessness. Therefore, they use other concepts or objects to explain their sense of gender. Xenogenders can be divided into three categories. The first category includes various objects, animals, parts of nature, and other concepts. This category includes, for example, cat genders, i.e. people who define their gender identity as a cat. The second category includes different sensory impressions such as colors, shapes or sizes and can have overlaps with the first category. The third category, however, is reserved for neurodivergent people, i.e. people with atypical neurological characteristics.

It should be noted that Futanari is a gender. The term therefore says nothing about the sexual orientation of the respective person. Futanari can therefore have many different sexual orientations and be attracted to different genders. Within the pornographic depictions, however, sexual relationships between Futanari and women or feminine non-binary persons are particularly frequently depicted. When a non-binary person is only attracted to women or non-binary people with female gender characteristics, they are said to be Neptunic. A very similar orientation is the term Trixic - these are non-binary people who are attracted to biological women.
